Queenstown and surroundings

Queenstown offers far more than an action-packed getaway. Spend time on the Gibbston wine trail and end with a meal at one of the many upmarket eateries on offer. Gibbston Valley is just about a 25-minute drive from downtown Queenstown, it is home to some of the region's oldest vineyards, finest restaurants, pubs, and the historic Kawaru Suspension Bridge. Visit Gibbston Valley Winery to sample a drop of there deletiable wine or perhaps take a tour of New Zealand's Largest Wine Cave. Take a trip down south to wander further afield into Fiordland National Park. It is one of the Southern Hemisphere’s great wilderness regions and has achieved World Heritage Status. Home to Mitre Peak, the stunning fiords of Milford Sound and Doubtful Sound, and the beautiful lakeside towns of Te Anau. Head over the Crown Ranges to the lakeside town of Wanaka, which is about an hour's drive from Queenstown. Wanaka is a beautiful year-round destination, set against the alpine backdrop of Mount Aspiring National Park. If you're feeling hungry, stop into the delicious lakefront cafe, Big Fig, serving slow cooked food and a range of yummy salads. Visit the historic gold mining settlement Arrowtown, a charming and quirky town with an array of great shops and cafes to browse through. You may wish to re-live scenes from Lord of the Rings on a four-wheel drive safari tour departing Queenstown. Or take a short drive to Glenorchy, for the chance to experience horse riding, jet boating, and helicopter tours. Take an iconic photo by the Glenorchy Boat shed. Return to Queenstown, take a brief to the secluded Bob's Cove, for amazing views from the viewpoint.
