New Zealand school holidays occur four times each year, with breaks in April, July, September/October and over summer from mid-December to late January. These periods are popular times for domestic travel, meaning accommodation, rental cars and attractions can be busier, particularly in destinations such as Queenstown, Rotorua, the Bay of Islands and the Coromandel. If you're travelling during school holidays, booking well in advance is recommended.
If you're planning a self-drive holiday in New Zealand, it's worth checking whether your travel dates overlap with local school holidays.
During these periods, many Kiwi families take holidays, creating higher demand for accommodation, rental vehicles, ferries and popular attractions. While New Zealand rarely feels overcrowded compared with many overseas destinations, you'll notice the biggest increase in visitor numbers during the summer school holidays and long holiday weekends.

When is the busiest school holiday period?
The summer school holidays are by far the busiest.
Running from mid-December through late January, this period coincides with Christmas, New Year and New Zealand's warmest weather. Popular destinations such as Queenstown, the Bay of Islands, Coromandel, Rotorua and Wanaka often experience their highest visitor numbers of the year.
Accommodation can book out months in advance, particularly between Christmas and mid-January.
Should I avoid travelling during school holidays?
Not necessarily.
School holidays can be a fantastic time to visit, especially if you're travelling with children or want to enjoy New Zealand during its most lively season.
The key is planning ahead.
If you'd prefer quieter roads, easier accommodation availability and slightly lower prices, consider travelling during March, April, May or November instead.
Do school holidays affect tour prices?
Sometimes.
Accommodation rates, rental car pricing and domestic flight costs can increase during peak holiday periods due to higher demand. This is most noticeable during the summer break and around Easter.
Booking early usually provides the best availability and pricing.
